reflexões / reflections is a body of work created from December 2025 through October 2026 by Simone DeSousa. It includes six singular paintings that will also exist as one suspended installation in space, allowing both front and back surfaces of the works to be equally experienced.

The new works are intimately connected to my experience in the past year, longing to translate that quality of allowing something beyond yourself to manifest. It rejoices in just Being, and it allows for several distinct conversations to coexist in one environment. A personal exploration into being both vulnerable and strong, open and self-defined.

reflexões / reflections is anchored in my Brazilian roots, which are ever so present in everything I do, in an intentional embracing of where I come from, while also honoring the environment that has later nurtured me and allowed me to fully develop as an artist. Detroit.

The paintings in reflexões / reflections are made of open wood frames that signal possibility, structures that hold metal panel fields that are the environments for paint to flow, for lines to make marks and connect the in-betweens, for imperfections and existing marks to be accepted as part of the whole, and for empty fields to reflect the environment and the individual. All of these layers are contained in singular paintings yet suggest infinite expansion beyond the structures that hold this moment.

reflexões / reflections opens at Vander Detroit on Thursday, October 22, with a gathering from 4 pm to 7 pm, and will be on view through November 8. The project also includes a new sculptural work titled Reverberations and paintings from the No Time series.
